The Story of Us: Markham Chiropractic + Rehab

As with the start of any new business, there is always a “good story” or a “bright idea” or a “journey” to tell.  In our case, it was our “journey” we will share with you that has led us to this very moment in our lives and the privilege and opportunity to serve the community of Markham, Stouffville, Richmond Hill and surrounding communities providing the following services Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Massage and Foot Orthotics.

Our humble beginnings started as students at the prestigious Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, Missouri, United States in 2005. We made the trek from our very own comfort zone and everyone and everything we knew about growing up in Canada to studying and living in the United States.  We loaded up our 4-door silver Honda Civic, full of everything we thought would be useful as students and after 1, 270 kilometers of driving in one day, we arrived in St. Louis close to midnight to witness the beauty of the St. Louis Arch (which we later learned was the “gateway” to the Midwest). Looking back, it truly represented the start of our journey and “gateway” into Chiropractic which led us to who we are today, why we do what we do and simply the love we have for our profession.

After 4700 class hours; 1 year of clinic requirements honing and crafting our art on student patients in the student clinic and later working on “real” patients in the Logan clinic system throughout St. Louis; meeting all of the school requirements in addition to successfully passing all 4 required licensing examinations (Part 1, 2, 3, 4) and 2 optional licensing examinations (Acupuncture and Physiotherapy) through the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners; completing all 3 required licensing examinations (Part A, B, C) through the Canadian Board of Chiropractic Examiners; taking multiple jurisprudence and ethics examinations, we were ready to get our first “real” job.

Over the 5+ years, we worked in various chiropractic offices in St. Louis and were exposed to the “good”, the “bad” and the “hmmm…is that suppose to happen?” scenarios as a new graduate.  We were eager and hungry to learn, to grow, to help as many people as possible through education, care and dedication to finding the root of the problem for our patients. It was truly rewarding to be able to help patients discover what it meant to live a life without pain, to function on a day-to-day basis and to simply perform their job better. It was even more rewarding to be able to meet other health care providers, such as medical doctors, physiotherapists and nurses and even potential patients in the community who had questions about chiropractic and who had misconceived fears and/or uncertainties regarding what we do and what our education was.  I recall being at a Chamber event and after my conversation with another health care provider, he point blank say to me, “Oh, that’s what you do. That makes sense. You are not as “weird” as I imagined a Chiropractor would be”.  Needless to say, I was able to help his patients which led to a good way to cross-refer to each other for the ultimate goal of getting the patients well holistically, with egos put aside. There is no room for egos in health care; it is all about the patients and ensuring they receive the best possible care.

Over the years, we envisioned and daydreamed what it would be like to be our very own boss, to operate our very own clinic, to be able to manage our own employees, what we would or would not do and at times it often seemed out of reach whether it be our own internal fears or not knowing when its the “right” time.  Many small events, often insignificant at the moment as they happen, is what led to us finally having the “ah ha” moment of “we are ready” and “we can do this!” a little more than a year ago.

After visiting multiple commercial spaces, driving all around Markham, Stouffville and Richmond Hill, spending all night brainstorming and making endless to-do lists, we are extremely excited to announce that Markham Chiropractic + Rehab will officially be opened and begin treating patients on TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2014!!!!

We would like to take this moment to thank all of our family and friends who stuck by us and who supported us throughout the many years, our mentors who guided us throughout different times in our life and our “home away from home”, St. Louis, you will not be forgotten as you have touched and changed our lives in so many ways.

To our potential new patients, business partners and health care providers in Markham, we look forward to developing new relationships with you and serving your health care needs!
